We are pleased to present one of the finest machines on the market for the accurate carving of identical wood items from an original pattern. These fine machines are built for a lifetime of use. I wanted to do my own ball-and-claw foot and not duplicate what others had done. I'm not completely satisfied with the way it turned out, so I may do another trial piece to try some different ideas I have.

This is a short preview to a lesson on carving the iconic ball and claw foot, a rite of passage for the serious period furniture woodcarver. The complete less. This is done using an indexer (rotation axis) on the CNC machine, and allows various designs. For instance round legs with a relief, sculptured square legs, 'Queen Anne' type legs with and without claw. The pictures above show some examples. With “Carve A Pierced Ball & Claw Foot”, you will learn which carving tools are used for different cuts, how to properly position and shape a ball and claw, as well as giving a detailed and dramatic look to your piece.
So here's what I'd suggest for a B&C foot. You can do most of the material removal on the ball and the toes with a bench chisel in the 3/8" to 5/8" range. I actually prefer to do this because the bench chisel is typically a little heavier and stiffer than a carving gouge.
Elevate your craft with this advanced CNC system. Configure, Design and Cut projects in minutes - all on one, easy-to-use platform. Full CNC Solution that includes the CNC machine, bits, dust collection system, software and premium support to successfully grow your business.
